Many people are fascinated with auto racing and the world of Formula 1 which saw Lewis Hamilton become the first coloured world champion driver for McLaren in 2008.  Another Formula one champion for Ferrari is the German driver Michael Schumacher who has won six times. Formula 1 racing is owned by Bernie Eccleston who used to be a racing driver himself.  Jeremy Clarkson hosts a programme called Top Gear that highlights all the best sports cars and has become one of the more popular programmes attracting many viewers.  This fascination for racing cars has led some enthusiasts to buy one as a second car and choose to store their vehicle in a pre-fab concrete garage (Beton Fertiggarage). At weekends they might take part in Invitation races that are often held at Silverstone and Thruckston.  Many enthusiasts get a great deal of pleasure from just polishing their sports car and showing it off to friends.

When competing in major racing events drivers are required to wear flameproof suits to protect themselves if the car catches fire which very often happens while refuelling during a pit stop or an accident on the track.  By wearing such protection it gives the attendants chance to reach the drivers and put out the flames before they receive fatal injuries.  Drivers competing at major events often look as though they are lying down in the car and operate everything by their hands.  Helmets are essential and cars will have different type of tyres for different type of racing.  Auto racing is very popular and prefabricated garages (Fertig garagen) are ideal for somewhere to store racing cars as well as other equipment they might need.  Formula 1 racing is followed by many people who would never dream of owning a sports car themselves but enjoy the excitement that it creates.  Younger people quite often drive over the speed limit as a way of showing off, but in built up areas this is extremely dangerous and fatal accidents often occur.  This is why motor insurance for younger people is very high as they are more likely to cause accidents by speeding. Racing any sort of vehicle should be confined to the proper race tracks and speed cameras in built up areas have helped to make our roads safer.
