Spectators’ Guide to the DARPA Urban Challenge (www.darpa.mil/grandchallenge)

The 2007 Urban Challenge is DARPA’s third autonomous robotic ground vehicle competition, and the program has created an entire community of team members, organizers, alumni, students and enthusiasts who have followed the event closely since the first one was held in 2004. This year’s competition promises to attract more spectators than ever, and the National Qualification Event and the Urban Challenge Final Event are both open to the public. All events take place at the former George Air Force Base on 18374 Phantom in Victorville, Calif. DARPA will provide a full range of resources on site to help event attendees make the most of their experience. There is no charge to attend.

Grandstands and access areas – Spectators will get an up-close view of the action in the grandstands located in the start/finish area and in designated access areas, and a public address announcer will keep viewers continually updated on the competition.

Jumbotron and Event Tent – During the final event on November 3, the Urban Challenge webcast will appear on a Jumbotron next to the bleachers and on plasma screens in the event tent.

Competition Webcast and Websites – The entire final event will be covered in a professionally hosted webcast starting at 6:30 AM PT on November 3 that will feature views of the competition from a variety of positions. Two event websites – www.darpa.mil/grandchallenge and www.grandchallenge.org will have regularly updated content on the competition and will serve as portals to the final event webcast.

Team and Sponsor Display Area – Several of the teams and their sponsors are planning exhibits and demonstration events in the sponsor area next to the start/finish line.

Comfort Facilities – Vendors will be on site to sell food and beverages to spectators. There also will be parking and restrooms on the grounds for spectators. There is no charge for parking.
